What is Universal Design and How Can I Use it in the Engineering Classroom?

Seminar Description: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for creating flexible, inclusive learning environments by providing multiple ways for students to engage, access information, and demonstrate their knowledge. This talk introduces UDL as a tool for creating more inclusive and effective engineering classrooms. Attendees will explore the core principles of UDL, explore practical examples of how UDL strategies can be applied to engineering teaching, and reflect on ways in which they can implement UDL into their classes. 

 

Dr. Rachel Figard is an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering and the Engineering Education Transformations Institute within the University of Georgia’s College of Engineering. Her research explores accessibility and user experience, sociotechnical design and learning, student experience, engineering culture, and broadening participation in engineering.
