The FSE Learning & Teaching Hub offers a variety of in-person, remote, self-paced, and just-in-time professional learning opportunities that are focused on research-based strategies for common teaching tasks and challenges. Our goal is to provide FSE faculty and instructional staff with high-quality professional learning to assist them in shaping effective learning environments.

A focus on Research-based Instructional Strategies in Engineering (RISE) is the backbone for Professional Learning activities within the Learning and Teaching Hub. In addition, we’re excited to offer opportunities to network and interact with peers through a newly established umbrella: the Educator Networking Group and Gatherings in Engineering (ENGAGE).

See below for several of our upcoming professional learning opportunities, including virtual speaker seminars, communities of practice, on-demand modules, and networking events. We invite everyone to #RISE and #ENGAGE with us!

Please see the sidebar menu and calendar below for more detailed information on upcoming professional learning opportunities.

Communities of Practice (CoP)

Group of happy people listening to an offscreen presenter.
Based on feedback from the community and a need for more personalized, applied learning, several Communities of Practice (CoPs) have been formed related to specific topics. These opportunities are open to anyone in the FSE community who is interested. CoPs meet virtually every month, with in-person opportunities provided through social and networking events. #RISE

Cohort of Recently-hired Educators (CORE)

Led by Stefani Jenkins

Cohort of Recently Hired Educators (CORE) is a hands-on community of practice designed exclusively for new engineering faculty at Arizona State University. CORE offers a dynamic workshop-style environment where participants actively engage in monthly sessions on key topics like active learning strategiesstudent motivation, and effective assessment techniques. Faculty will leave each session with actionable strategies and ready-to-implement ideas tailored to their classrooms.

CORE meets virtually twice a month throughout the academic year. Explore the 2024-2025 academic calendar flyer for more details.

Generative AI in Teaching and Learning

Led by Jonathan McMichael

What role can Generative AI play in enhancing FSE courses? This Community of Practice invites faculty and educators to engage in an initiative focused on exploring the potential of Generative AI in education at FSE. Together, we’ll discover how AI tools are being used by students and how you can evolve your teaching strategies to integrate this technology for enhanced student success.

As part of the 2024-2025 academic year, we’ll launch a hands-on AI design initiative, LTH’s MyAIBuilder Design Sprint. Participants will work collaboratively to develop AI-driven solutions to real-world educational needs. Through interactive workshops, guided support sessions, and a final showcase, you will have the opportunity to design, implement, and assess innovative tools that elevate classroom experiences and foster student achievement. Whether you’re experienced with AI or just beginning to explore its possibilities, join us to share insights and collaborate in using Generative AI to enhance student learning outcomes.

Inclusive Learning Environments

Led by Christina Carrasquilla and Stefani Jenkins

This community of practice explores strategies to support inclusive and student-centered learning spaces in higher education. We focus on creating collaborative learning spaces, such as cross-disciplinary courses where students come together to learn collaboratively, fostering a shared sense of community. Additionally, we examine flexible modality choices, giving students the option to participate in-person, online, or through hybrid models to empower student engagement. Finally, we explore where students are involved in decisions about course pacing and deadlines. This approach not only promotes a strong sense of agency and community but also enhances learning outcomes and fosters an environment where all students feel actively engaged in their educational journey.

Learning Communities

Led by Eric Bishop and Andrew Salcido

In support of ASU’s commitment to access and student success, learning communities have emerged as a key strategy for enhancing student engagement and performance. This community of practice focuses on scaling the implementation of learning communities across multiple modalities. By fostering collaborative partnerships between students, faculty, and staff, these communities address structural barriers to education while promoting a sense of belonging through intentional design.

This practice will explore key outcomes from recent initiatives, provide interactive demonstrations, and offer practical resources for educators looking to integrate learning communities into their courses. We will strive to leave with actionable strategies and adaptable resources that can be implemented across diverse disciplines with minimal preparation, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

LTH Book Study

Led by Marnie Wong and Kristen Peña

Expand your teaching toolkit by reading and discussing teaching and learning through our professional book study! Every semester, LTH hosts a 3-part, virtual book study with a teaching book-of-choice from the community. Book copies are made available to those interested and through the ASU library.

Mastery-Based Learning

Led by Keith Hjelmstad and Medha Dalal

Mastery-based learning is traditionally viewed as a system wherein students move on to the next topic only upon demonstrating mastery of the previous one, often in an asynchronous format. However, in a university setting with fixed semesters, how can we leverage the benefits of mastery-based learning? In this community of practice, we will explore how to apply mastery-based assessment strategies in synchronous, traditional learning environments. We will look at ways to implement some of these strategies in undergraduate engineering courses and discuss the strengths and limitations of these strategies.

Meaningful Learning with Multimedia

Led by Dhruv Bhate and Nick Lindquist

Multimedia has the potential to create meaningful and engaging experiences, but how can we design and deliver content that truly enhances student learning? This Community of Practice explores the development and implementation of multimedia content that supports and complements hands-on learning. Participants will engage in collaborative discussions, share best practices, and explore tools and techniques for multimedia design and integration in engineering courses.

Scalable Classroom Assessments in Large Enrollments (SCALE)

Led by Jon Baek and Ryan Meuth

How do you know how your students are doing?  What if you have 200 students? 1000? Grading assignments, exams, and projects for many students can be extremely challenging.  This community of practice is for anyone interested in exploring formative and summative assessments in larger class enrollments. We’ll discuss challenges and share strategies to increase academic integrity, analyze designs of assessments for efficient evaluation, implement peer evaluation best practices, and utilize technology systems that can support high-quality assessments while maximizing efficient grading. We will meet a couple of times per semester, online or in person, for all that would like to attend.
