Fulton Schools of Engineering Education Seminars (SEEdS) – Surviving and Thriving in a Generative AI Future
Guest Speaker: Andrew Maynard
Date: October 18, 2024 | 12:00 – 1:00pm MST
Location: Zoom
Seminar Description: Over the past two years generative AI has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives — including how we think about education, how we teach, and how our students learn. The promise of AI-assisted learning represents a profound leap in education at scale. But as is often the case, the reality is somewhat more complex. In this seminar, some of the challenges and opportunities surrounding generative AI in learning and the classroom will be explored, as well as emerging trends in this field and what they might mean for teaching. As this is such a rapidly emerging area, substantial time will be devoted to discussion and sharing concerns, opportunities, practices, and insights.
Andrew Maynard is a scientist, author, and Professor of Advanced Technology Transitions in the ASU School for the Future of Innovation in Society. His work focuses on understanding and successfully navigating transformative technologies from a transdisciplinary perspective — including generative AI and AI more generally. He is director of the ASU Future of Being Human initiative, is author of the books “Films from the Future: The Technology and Morality of Sci-Fi Movies” and “Future Rising: A Journey from the Past to the Edge of Tomorrow”, and writes regularly for the Substack The Future of Being Human.
In addition, Andrew is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Research Council, has served on a number of National Academies of Sciences committees, and has testified before congressional committees on several occasions. Since 2008 he has worked closely with the World Economic Forum in a number of capacities, including contributing to the WEF annual list of Top Ten Emerging Technologies.
