Does Adaptive Teaching Improve Flipped Classrooms? Insights from applying adaptive learning to a higher-level course at three universities
Guest Speaker: Saurav Kumar
Date: September 20, 2024 | 12:00 – 1:00pm MST
Location: Zoom
Seminar Description: Saurav Kumar will present findings from a recent experiment comparing three instructional methods for teaching Numerical Methods: traditional lecture, flipped classroom, and flipped adaptive approaches. Conducted at ASU in collaboration with two other institutions, the experiment was part of a recently concluded NSF project. This seminar will explore not only the comparative effectiveness of these methods but also the challenges and opportunities encountered when implementing flipped and flipped adaptive strategies within existing infrastructure constraints. Kumar will also examine student responses and engagement levels with each teaching method, offering insights into their effectiveness and impact on learning outcomes.
Saurav is an Assistant Professor at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. His research is focused on satellite and aerial remote sensing to better understand water systems. Saurav has been Co-PI for a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project to understand how flipped classrooms change by integrating personalized and adaptive learning experiences into undergraduate courses. This project, in collaboration with the University of South Florida, Alabama A&M University, and Arizona State University, seeks to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes through innovative flipped classroom methodologies and adaptive pre-class content. In this talk, he will present some of the lessons from the study at three sites.
