An Unfinished Journey toward Active Engagement and Learning
in the Engineering Classroom

Guest Speaker: Christopher M Papadopoulos

Seminar Description: How can instructors move from being the “main actor” in the classroom to serving as a coach, facilitator, and consultant for student learning? In this seminar, the speaker will share a three-decade journey of transforming teaching, from improving traditional lectures and encouraging student questions to adopting inverted classrooms, concept-based instruction, mastery-based learning, and studio-style classrooms. The talk will highlight strategies, lessons learned, and results from approaches that combine problem solving, hands-on and abstract work, peer learning, and timely feedback. Attendees will come away with practical ideas for implementing active learning thoughtfully, collaborating with colleagues inside and outside their institutions, and continuing to adapt teaching in response to new opportunities, including artificial intelligence.

Christopher Papadopoulos, PhD, is Professor of Engineering Sciences and Materials at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM). He earned B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University (1993) and a Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at Cornell University (1999). At UPRM he has done extensive work in Engineering Mechanics Education and Engineering Ethics, and is co-PI of Engineering for All, funded by the NSF IUSE RED program. He is also an active member and former Chair of the ASEE Mechanics Division. Beyond mechanics, Papadopoulos is also a member of the steering committee of the Sustainability Engineering initiative, which seeks to develop new Minor, Bachelors, Masters, and professional certificate programs. In this regard he served as PI of A New Paradigm for Sustainability Engineering: A Transdisciplinary, Learner-Centered, and Diversity-Focused Approach, funded by the NSF HSI program and he is a member of the Engineering for One Planet Network. He also co-chaired the 18th International Conference on Nonconventional Materials and Technologies (NOCMAT2022). Papadopoulos brings a systems thinking, transdisciplinary, circular-economic/cradle-to-cradle mindset to engineering education, actively collaborating with several faculty, students, and sustainability-focused organizations in Puerto Rico and in the US.
