SUMMARY:Fulton Schools of Engineering Education Seminars (SEEdS) - Pedag
ogy of Engagement with Karl Smith & Kristen Peña
DESCRIPTION:Fulton Schools of Engineering Education Seminars (SEEdS) -
Pedagogy of Engagement: Design and Implementation of Interactive Learnin
g\n\nGuest Speakers: Karl Smith and Kristen Peña\n\nDate: February 21\
 , 2025 | 12:00 - 1:00pm MST\n\nLocation: Zoom\n\nSeminar Description: Fo
stering engagement and collaboration in the classroom is more critical t
han ever. This seminar explores the Pedagogy of Engagement\, focusing on
the transformative impact of cooperative and interactive learning. Fram
ed by major shifts in engineering education and principles of how learni
ng works\, the session will delve into cooperative learning strategiesâ€
 ”informal\, formal\, and base groups—and highlight evidence-based prac
tices that foster student collaboration and deeper learning.\n\n&nbsp\;\
n\n\n\nKarl A. Smith is Emeritus Cooperative Learning Professor of Engin
eering Education\, School of Engineering Education\, at Purdue Universit
 y. He is also Emeritus Professor of Civil\, Environmental\, and Geo- Eng
 ineering\, Morse-Alumni Distinguished University Teaching Professor\, an
d Faculty Member\, Technological Leadership Institute at the University
of Minnesota. He joined the University of Minnesota in 1972 and started
his academic career as a materials processing engineering researcher. In
1991 he changed careers to focus on engineering education research and
in 2006 he accepted a part time position as Cooperative Learning Profess
or\, School of Engineering Education\, Purdue University to help start t
he engineering education PhD program in the College of Engineering. His
research and development interests include building research and innovat
ion capabilities in engineering education\; faculty and graduate student
professional development\; and the role of cooperation in learning and
design. Karl has over 40 years of experience working with faculty to red
esign their courses and programs to improve student learning. He adapted
the cooperative learning model to engineering education and has helped
many faculty and graduate students with implementation. He wrote or co-w
rote eight books including How to model it:  Problem solving for the co
mputer age\, Cooperative learning:  Increasing college faculty instruct
ional productivity\, New paradigms for college teaching\, Strategies for
energizing large classes: From small groups to learning communities\, A
ctive learning: Cooperation in the college classroom\, and Teamwork and
project management. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in metal
lurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University and his Ph.D
. is in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota.\n\n&nbs
p\;\n\nKristen Peña serves as the Senior Program Manager\, Learning Ini
tiatives at the Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) Learning &amp\; Tea

nd delivery of faculty professional learning programs\, including commun
 ities of practice\, workshops\, quick-reference guides\, and other resou
rces designed to support engineering instructional staff and faculty. Pe
ña has held various positions in higher education\, focusing on studen
 t development\, faculty-directed initiatives\, and entrepreneurial exper
iential learning. As a first-generation college graduate\, she earned
her Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation from Arizona State
University (ASU). Her research interests center on faculty professional
 development\, faculty-student interactions\, first-generation college st
udent experiences\, and strategies for retaining students in STEM fields
.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nMore about Fulton Schools of Engineering Education S
eminars (SEEdS) \n\nLTH will continue to host monthly guest speaker sem
inars for the community to regularly learn about and discuss topics rela
ted to Engineering Education. The seminars\, formerly known as the Teach
ing Community of Practice (TCP)\, are open to anyone interested in the F
SE community. See our professional learning calendar for the most up to
date information and other opportunities.\n\nSpring 2025 | Third Fridays
