LMS (Canvas)

What is Canvas?

Canvas LMS is an open and reliable web-based software that allows institutions to manage digital learning, educators to create and present online learning materials and assess student learning, and students to engage in courses and receive feedback about skill development and learning achievement.

FSE and ASU have partnered with many third party software vendors to allow access to their tools within Canvas.

Why should I use Canvas?

If you are teaching an online course or hybrid/blended learning course, setting up a Canvas course is a requirement – without a Canvas course, your students have no way to access your curricula. This will allow students a single place to communicate with you and other students, view any course content you wish to share, view discussion board posts, turn in assignments, check grades, and take exams and other assessments.

A Canvas course associated with a campus-based class can also yield many benefits for you and your students: assignments can be turned in to you digitally, and you can comment on them and hand them back to students without having to print a physical copy. Also, the Canvas gradebook allows you to send your grades to your college at the end of the semester, without manual input.

How do I go about getting started?

For all credit based courses, you must request a new Canvas course via the course request system: https://webapp4.asu.edu/cem-request/

The system will need the schedule line number(s) (SLN) of your course, and the SLN(s) if you are copying content from a previous course you taught. Please refer to this document for help (ASURITE login required) and email [email protected] with any questions.

Are there additional resources available?

The University Technology Office manages the Canvas LMS at ASU, and all support and training. You can find more information here: https://lms.asu.edu/resources-instructors
